On Thursday, September 6th, the Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers (WAAL) hosted the SOLD OUT 28th Annual VelanDale Scholarship Dinner at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. We acknowledged the contributions of Vel and Dale Phillips to the legal community, both as public servants, activists, and mentors.
Guests heard from keynote speaker, April Miller Boise, SVP, Chief Legal Officer, & Corporate Secretary of Meritor, Inc., a Fortune 500 company, and manufacturer of automobile components for military suppliers, trucks, and trailers. She was joined by Marcia Facey Drame, Assistant Secretary and Assistant General Counsel of Northwestern Mutual, in a fireside chat about the 2019 WAAL theme "Lift as We Climb."
WAAL also awarded four law students with scholarship awards. Renee Jones of Marquette University Law School and Jason Meehan of University of Wisconsin Law School received the VelanDale Scholarship Awards, Marcellus Parker of Marquette University Law School received the Hon. Maxine A. White Book Scholarship Award, and Ebria Karega of University of Wisconsin Law School received the first ever Hon. Charles N. Clevert, Jr. Scholarship Award. Attorney Kori Ashley of Legal Action of Wisconsin was awarded with the 2018 WAAL Attorney of the Year Award.
Thank you to all who attended and sponsored this sold out event. We hope that you will support WAAL in our upcoming events and initiatives.
