On Thursday, September 12th, the Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers (WAAL) hosted the SOLD OUT 29th Annual VelanDale Scholarship Dinner at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. We acknowledged the contributions of Vel and Dale Phillips to the legal community, both as public servants, activists, and mentors.
At the dinner, Attorney Makda Fessahaye of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections was installed as WAAL's 28th President, and the 2019-2020 Board of Directors were announced. Guests heard from former WAAL President, Celia Jackson, on the history of black lawyers in Wisconsin. The event kicked off the 2019-2020 theme of the year "Advancing the Mission: Pioneering Change."
WAAL also awarded four law students with scholarship awards. Wynetta McIntosh of Marquette University Law School and Lauren Nelson of University of Wisconsin Law School received the VelanDale Scholarship Awards, Kelsey Brown of Marquette University Law School received the Hon. Maxine A. White Book Scholarship Award, and Mikal Roberson received the Hon. Charles N. Clevert, Jr. Scholarship Award. Attorney Odalo J. Ohiku of the Law Office of Odalo J. Ohiku was awarded with the 2019 WAAL Attorney of the Year Award.
Thank you to all who attended and sponsored this sold out event. We hope that you will support WAAL in our upcoming events and initiatives.
